The fabric of democracy has been undermined by the acrimonious ‘fora’ taking place in the last few years. On what premise do I claim this? Gun based discourses have riddled and punctuated radios, televisions, and mass media. There have been appeals to fight fire with fire – the way to stop a bad man with a gun is a good man with a gun. Quite a number subscribe to such a tenet. Initial impression renders the appeal plausible. Yet, the statistics state otherwise. According to a 2012 study by the US based Violence Policy Center, criminal homicide outnumbered justifiable homicide by 32 times. (This is discounting accidental discharges and suicides.) In spite of this, gun rights proponents continue with their fundamentalist zeal. Meanwhile, on the other side of the partisan divide, families of victims and gun control supporters work on their end to prevent the tragic repetition of history. This is only one instance of the bigoted ‘democracy’ that we have in the US today.
